Chennai Metro Rail Limited to buy 10 train sets in 2020
Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) will procure 10 train sets for the extended portion of phase – I from Washermanpet to Wimco Nagar in 2020. The Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry, a key funder of the project, would allocate Rs 254 crore for procuring 40 train coaches from Alstom Transport India Limited for extension of corridor I of first phase of the metro project in the city.

The train sets are expected to be delivered in phases between February 29 and July 31, 2020 from Alstom’s unit at Sri City in Andhra, Union Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri told the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, replying to a query raised AIADMK Maitreyan who sought to know details of fund distribution and train procurement for CMRL.
Going by the minister’s reply, another eight coaches meant for the currently operational first phase would be delivered by December 2018 from Alstom’s unit at Sri City in Andhra. CMRL had received 36 coaches costing Rs 364.86 crore from Alstom’s unit at Lapa in Brazil during June 6, 2013 – June 11, 2014 period for phase-I. Another 124 train coaches were received in phases from March 1, 2014 to June 24, 2016. Meanwhile, CMRL has commenced soil testing for the second phase of CMRL network on the arterial Old Mahaballipuram Road which would extend from the city all the way up to Siruseri.
