Police identified the arrested as Aravindan of Thittakudi in Cuddalore, a BSc graduate who was into real estate business. He had allegedly claimed that he was preparing for UPSC examinations, besides telling people that he knew many senior officials, including IAS and IPS officers. He had also received money and promised people that he can get government jobs for them.

Believing his promise, Uma, a resident of Tondiarpet, had given him Rs three lakh, hoping to get a government job. Police said that she knew him through a common friend. When he failed to get her the job, the woman asked him to return the money. The accused promised to give the money back, however, when they met at Ashok Pillar, he sought additional time.

This led to a quarrel between him and Uma, who lodged a complaint with the Ashok Nagar police. After conducting an inquiry, the police arrested Aravindan, seized a car and 20 sovereigns of gold from him. Police suspect that he could have cheated at least 10 other people in a similar fashion.
