Hospital to create ‘wall of stories’ to keep kids engrossed
Being in a hospital can easily depress people, especially children, who tend to get restless. Therefore, to keep the kids occupied and entertained, the Institute of Child Health and Children’s Hospital (ICH) in Egmore is working towards setting up a wall of stories, and a wall of art within the hospital campus.

Hoping that parents or guardians staying with the child can read out the stories that are put up to the child, Dr AT Arasar Seeralar, director of the institute told DT Next, “We have seen how restless the children can get in the hospital. Therefore, we worked on a plan to ensure they see more colours and stay engrossed in fun activities.”
“We will also have volunteers – mostly students from Fine Arts colleges – who can read out to the children. The stories on the walls will be accompanied by illustrations,” said Seeralar.
The hospital also plans to set up a wall of art, he said. “The wall will hold a blackboard and a whiteboard. The children will be provided with colourful chalks, sketch pens and colours. This will also encourage the children’s creativity,” added the director.
As part of this segment, the hospital is also setting up an indoor play area for the children, where they can participate in yoga activities during the day and play indoor games in the evening. “Games like carrom board, floor diagram and other games will be available in the playing area. Involving themselves in such activities will help to distract the young patients you may be under a lot of pain in the hospital. It can take a bit of stress off the parents,” Seeralar said.
The entire initiative is being funded by the women’s wing of the Lion’s Club and is to be inaugurated by the end of August.
