College girl commits suicide, boyfriend held

Manikandan (21) of Poothapedu and the deceased, Kayalvizhi (21), both final-year engineering students of a private engineering college in Sriperumpudur, had been in a relationship for the last few years despite opposition from families. 

Last year, the girl’s parents went to Manikandan’s house and reportedly expressed their disapproval over the relationship. But the duo continued to see each other. 

However, differences erupted between them and Kayalvizhi was dejected after Manikandan spoke badly about her father. Around 1 am on Wednesday, Kayalvizhi doused herself in kerosene and set ablaze, suffering 98 per cent burns. Her family rushed her to a hospital, where she was declared brought dead.
