A decade of horror: Man held for raping, impregnating daughter

According to police, the accused, whose wife is mentally challenged, hails from a village near Somangalam in Kancheepuram. The couple had 10 children, of whom three died a few years ago. 

Nearly 10 years ago, the family had shifted to Pune where he worked as a housekeeper at a bungalow. It was there that the father started sexually assaulting the girl child – at a time when she was all of 12 years. In 2015, the family returned to Kancheepuram. 

Police said the man continued to sexually assault his daughter even after returning. In 2016, when the girl was 20 years, she became pregnant. But without informing anyone, he forcefully aborted the pregnancy using pills. 

After that he had stopped sexually assaulting her for a while. However, he tried to sexually abuse her again in July, which led to the girl attempting suicide by slashing her wrist on July 22. She was rushed to the hospital by her father. Even after this, he continued to misbehave with the girl when she returned home from the hospital. 

Finally, the girl filed a complaint against her father with Somangalam police. The girl reportedly told the police that he had threatened to kill her if she revealed this to anyone. But she decided to lodge a complaint as she feared that the man would harass her sister, too, she added. On Tuesday night, the police nabbed the man, who was on the run, at the Pudunallur junction near Kancheepuram and remanded him in judicial custody.
