Some of the 22 men, including a 66-year-old lift operator, who allegedly raped a 11-year-old in an apartment complex in Ayanavaram, told the girl that they were playing a game with her.

For seven months, the accused would take the hearing and speech impaired child to the terrace and unoccupied flats, and sexually assault her. The police found some unidentified powder and used condoms from the places that the girl was assaulted — sometimes under the influence of sedatives or on knife point. She also bore injection marks on her arm.

The police team that accompanied the Class 7 student to the apartment complex on Monday, after the family lodged complaint on Sunday night, was shocked to find that a majority of the violators identified by the survivor were people who were employed as security guards, maintenance staff and lift operators.

Sources in the police said that the child had told her parents that she had been playing “sex games” with the men who raped her but they could not understand her. The crime came to light when the survivor’s elder sister who came down from Delhi recently, figured out what she had been trying to say. The sister, a student of a college in Delhi then informed the family about it and who then approached the police.

During the initial investigation, the police expected two to three men to be involved in the case but were shocked when the child identified 18 men as her alleged rapists. She also communicated that there were four others who too had assaulted her.

“The girl looked scared of the men because of their security guard’s uniform. Once they were asked to remove their uniform and wear casual clothes, the child grew confident and identified the perpetrators,” said a police source.

Meanwhile, the police were also shocked to find that the child’s mother — who is a homemaker — had no inkling of what her daughter was going through despite the girl bearing injection puncture marks on her arm and staying out late after school. “The mother had failed to notice injury marks and had not even checked up on the girl when she would stay out of the house for about two hours,” said a police officer.

According to sources, the mother assumed that the child would arrive late from school as she played with other children in the apartment complex after returning from school. Ever since January, as soon as the child got off the school bus, she would be whisked away by the suspects to abandoned areas within the complex for an hour or two to “play games”.

The child recounted an incident when one of the violators had stopped a lift of an almost unoccupied block mid-way to rape her inside it. The accused also recorded some of the sexual assault a few times to black mail the survivor with it.
