The fest promises to provide a boost to the city’s LGBTQI community by supporting not only the art, but also the artists behind the creative content. A three-day series of feature films, shorts and documentaries showcasing sexuality and gender diversity issues, Reel Desires is predominantly organised by Orinam, Goethe-Institut, Nirangal, CQC, SAATHII, and the East-West Center for Counselling and Training.

Felix, one of the volunteers from Orinam who is actively involved in the fest, said, “The representation of the queer community at mainstream film festivals is quite non-existent, so it was imperative we organised something from our side to promote the cause.

It will be a safe space for artists from the community to express themselves as well as gain recognition. This is the sixth edition of our initiative under the banner of Reel Desires, and we have done our best to support the community.”

Apart from the screenings, there will also be a poetry reading by transgender rights activist Kalki Subramaniam, a panel discussion on the topic of ‘Intersections and Solidarities: LGBTQIA+ and other movements for justice and equality’ and an acclaimed solo play and performance of A Revathi’s Vel lai Mazhai.

The entry is free and the events will be held at the Goethe-Institut Chennai, Max Mueller Bhavan from July 27 to 29. “The films screened will be a mix of both international and Indian content.

Some of the filmmakers behind the movies, like Lokesh Kumar who directed the Tamil film My Son Is Gay , will be there to interact with the audience. Similarly, the makers of Malayalam flick Irattajeevitham also will make their presence felt.

In all, there are 31 films from 17 countries being screened with around 10 to 12 Indian films as part of the program,” added Felix.
