Parents undergo training to impart life skills to children
In a fast-changing environment, the lack of life skills has become very common, which has resulted in the dire need for educational institutions to introduce it as a part of the curriculum. To emphasize the need for these skills to be imparted to the students, a thought provoking session for parents, ‘Life Skills for 21st Century Students,’ was held in the city.
Chennai
Stressing on the need of right counselling for parents, Dr Vijayan, Founder-Chairman, Zion Group of Schools, said, “Parents tend to forget their responsibilities as they are so pre-occupied with their work.
Children earlier would be very obedient to their parents, a factor found to be lacking today. Now, children tend to trust their peers more than their family, a factor responsible for the breaking of many relationships.”
Ramani Ramachandran, Managing Director, CI Global Technologies, spoke about two types of education. While academic education is important, the lessons that life teaches you are more important, he said.
Ninan Thariyan, CEO of DTNext, while advising the participants of the programme, said, “Parents have become over protective and we cannot blame them. However, what we, as parents, must realise is that because of this shell that we put around our children, some of their life skills fail to develop. That is why educational institutions today have a separate subject of life skills.”
Asking the parents if their children are geared up for the future, Vidyashankar Guru, founder and CEO, OnlySuccess – the organisation that conducted the programme – said that educational institutions should prepare the students to face the future. Around 243 families were present at the event, which also saw the participation of students from 43 schools in the city.
