Woman officer among 2 SIs attacked in city
Even after the death of a person in an encounter for assaulting a policeman, the attacks against police personnel in the city are continuing, with two sub-inspectors, including a woman officer, coming under attack on the same day. In one case, it was a group of burglars which attacked the SI, while the second officer suffered injuries when she intervened in a family dispute, on Friday.

Sub-inspector Selvakumar faced knife attack when he confronted a gang led by a notorious burglar at Royapuram.Â
The accused Dayalan, who has several burglary cases against him, and his aides Siva, Sugu and Vinothkumarm attacked a pedestrian. Witnessing this, the sub-inspector and two other constables confronted the gang. In a bid to escape, Dayalan suddenly slit Selvakumar’s hand. However, the other two constables secured the gang and admitted Selvakumar to a nearby hospital. The sub-inspector has 10 stitches on his hand to close the wound.
In the second incident, a woman sub-inspector attached to the Pulianthope All-Women Police Station was attacked when she tried to intervene in a family dispute at the police station on Friday.
Police said Raja of KP Park in Basin Bridge, an auto driver, his wife Manimegalai (23), and relatives approached Pulianthope AWPS over a family dispute on Friday.
After interrogating them and counselling the couple, police asked them to wait outside the station. But an argument broke out among the family members leading to a fisticuff.
On seeing this, SI Ambika intervened to pacify them. But they attacked Ambika, which left her with injuries. She was treated in a nearby hospital, said police.
Following this, five people – Elumalai (48), his son Ranjith (24), relative Chellammal (47), son-in-law Raja (25) and Raja’s grandmother Palaiamma (65) – were arrested and remanded in judicial custody on Saturday.
