    Man from Rajasthan gets 7-year jail under POCSO Act

    A Mahila Court in Chennai awarded seven-year prison sentence and slapped a fine of Rs 50,000 on a man from Rajasthan after convicting him for sexually abusing a minor in 2016. The man, a carpenter, would have to spend an additional year in prison if he failed to pay the fine.

    According to police, Chembu Singh, a 27-year-old from Rajasthan was working at a building on GN Chetty Road in T Nagar. On March 5, 2016, he allegedly tried to molest a 12-year-old boy, son of a woman who worked in the adjacent building. When she learnt about the incident, the boy’s mother filed a complaint with Pondi Bazaar station. A case was registered under POCSO Act, and the man was arrested and lodged in prison.

    After hearing the case, the Mahila Court found him guilty and convicted him. Delivering the verdict on Monday, the court awarded him seven years in prison and Rs 50,000 fine.

    Meanwhile, police arrested a 64-year-old man for allegedly trying to molest an 8-year-old minor. According to po-lice, the girl and her father, a building contract, was playing at their residence in Taramani on Sunday when the incident happened. The father complained that the security guard, Rajendran, allegedly misbehaved with the child. 

    After a complaint was filed at the All-Women police station at Pattinampakkam, a case was registered under POCSO Act and investigations began. Police found that the complaint was prima facie true. Following this, Rajendran was arrested. He was presented before the court, which remanded him in custody.
