20-yr-old student from Delhi attacked, robbed in city
Even as the city police went on a storming drive to crackdown on petty criminals behind the alarming rise of snatchings and robberies reported in the city, a 20-year-old college student from Delhi was attacked and his belongings were robbed by a gang near Madhya Kailash on Wednesday night.
Chennai
The youth, identified as Nitish, informed the Kotturpuram police about the incident and had taken treatment at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital as outpatient on Wednesday night. After reaching the city as a tourist, Nitish, a resident of sector 108, Nizamuddin, Delhi, was staying in a hotel in Besant Nagar. He is said to be a student of an arts college in Delhi.Â
Police said was travelling on a share autorickshaw when a five-member gang got into the same vehicle near Madhya Kailash and attacked him. He was beaten up and bundled out by the gang, who robbed his belongings. It is suspected that the driver of the vehicle was hand in glove with the gang. Sources said the youth lost his Dell laptop, an iPhone and Rs 25,000 to the robbery gang, sources noted.Â
Though the local police maintained that they have not received any complaint from the victim, a police team is browsing the CCTV footage of the locality to verify the youth’s claim of being a victim of robbery.Â
The police are also trying to find out the details of the vehicle in which he was travelling, suspecting its driver to be a part of the gang. The incident happened despite the police deploying special crime prevention teams in the night hours after a sudden increase in cases of mugging in the city last month.Â
