NHAI seeks state’s help to acquire land
After struggling to complete the work on the Chennai-Tirupati (NH 205) project that it had taken up in 2013, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has sought help from the state government to acquire land and finish the project without further delay. The agency has been hit by land acquisition hurdles that delayed the project by years.

“We had faced hurdles while completing the main stretch. When we took up the 12km stretch between Thiruninravur and Thiruppachur, there was stiff opposition from traders and public during land acquisition,” said an NHAI engineer.
They faced the same issue while working on the 24km stretch between Padi and Thiruninravur. As NHAI was unable to undertake works on these two stretches, it handed over the work to State Highways (SH) by allotting Rs 98 crore. However, SH officials, too, continued to face opposition and works were abandoned.
“The contracting agency communicated to us and sought to accelerate the process. So we approached the Union Surface Transport Ministry for the same and it has informed the state,” said another NHAI engineer.
Meanwhile, activists have demanded that the officials concerned should finish the project soon and ease traffic. When contacted, a senior NHAI official said, “All the pending works, including Chennai-Tirupati Highway, will be undertaken soon and efforts are on to complete the works.”
