Details of weekly off for police sought
The Madras High Court has sought the state to come out with details of providing a compulsory day off for police personnel like other government staff instead of making it optional and rushing them to work as and when required.
Chennai
Justice N Kirubakaran before whom the plea pertaining to abolition of orderly system came up for hearing on Tuesday directed Additional Advocate General P H Arvindh Pandian to get instructions in this regard and posted the case for further hearing to July 12.Â
The judge on citing various incidents where the police have been drawn for attack, orally observed the need for bringing about legislation prevailing in other states like Maharashtra to prevent organised crime.Â
However, the status report filed by the Assistant Inspector General of Police (Law and Order), said definite working hours has already been implemented in the police department.Â
Where ever there is heavy, continuous and outdoor work, eight hours duty in three shifts (ABC shift system) is implemented. One day off has been given to all the police personnel in Tamil Nadu. Extra time remuneration is also given to police personnel willing to forego their weekly off, the status report added.
