Corporation to replace 500 damaged bus shelters

Given that as many as 500 Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) bus stops are without shelters both in the city and the suburbs, the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) officials, responsible for either constructing or undertaking repair works, are examining such stops to build permanent shelters.

Sources said that even though the city has around 3,200 MTC bus stops, 75 per cent of the stops were roofless and this forces passengers to bear the scorching heat during summers.

Worse, during the rainy season, they are left a wet lot. Commuters complained that in the absence of shelters, they were also unable to identify the bus route numbers which would be fixed on the shelters.

Daniel Robinson, programme manager, Chennai City Connect, said, “The construction of MTC bus shelters would help the commuters. Since the MTC is surveying bus shelters to provide an app-based facility to locate MTC buses, shelters need to be constructed where they are not available.” He suggested that the Corporation could fix LED lights on the shelters so that commuters can know about bus routes and numbers.

When contacted, a senior official, GCC, said that they are renovating more than 100 bus stops. “We have received a series of complaints about roofless MTC bus stops from passengers. We have started studying such bus stops after which we will construct new shelters,” said the official.
