4 held for attempt to kill horse near Marina
A gang of five youngsters, including a minor, who allegedly attempted to kill a horse by slitting its throat over previous enmity with its owner, was detained by the city police. Such was the sweep of the cut that the veterinary doctors had to put nearly 50 stitches on the horse’s neck to close the wound.

Stephen, the eight-year-old horse, belongs to S Rajesh (35) of Nadukuppam in Triplicane, who rents it out for wedding processions. It is also used to take children and adults for joy rides at Marina beach.
On Monday afternoon, Rajesh was alerted by the loud neighs of the horse. When he rushed outside to check what happened, he saw a group of men running away, leaving behind the horse in a pool of blood. Rajesh immediately arranged a mini truck and rushed the animal to the Government Veterinary Hospital in Vepery. The doctors put 47 stitches, said hospital sources, adding that it was out of danger.
Based on Rajesh complaint, Marina police had registered a case. Meanwhile, as part of the ongoing storming operation, police picked up A Kareem (18), R Vignesh (18), B Vishal (19), R Karthik (22) and a minor from Nadukuppam. During questioning, police came to know that they were the ones who injured the horse. However, Gokul, the main accused, is still at large.
According to police, the gang was arrested after they attempted to break open a car window to steal valuables last month. “They thought it was Rajesh who informed the police, as he happened to witness the incident,” said police.
Four of the five arrested gang members were remanded under Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.
Rajesh said the doctors have told him that the horse could be taken home after two days.
