SAE India’s tractor design competition at SRM
For the first time in the country, SAE India Southern Section has organised Tractor Design Competition (TDC) under the Student Design Competition category, targeted at solving many real time challenges, at the SRM Institute of Science Technology near Chennai
Chennai
It would provide a platform for connecting the bright engineering talent available in the country with real-life challenges. Through these programmes, students across the country will participate in providing innovative solutions towards product design and development challenge.
The Tractor Design Competition takes students beyond textbook theory by enabling them to design, build and test the performance of tractors and then compete with other students from across the country.
Students are challenged with a hands-on engineering experience that also requires budgeting, communication, project management and resource management skills.
College students also gain valuable exposure with recruiters of leading original equipment manufacturers (OEM) in the off-highway industry, to help them land their first job after graduation.
Students get practical experience in various vehicle system level integration and sub systems like design of drive systems, tractor performance, manufacturing process and analysis of tractive forces.
Evaluation of Students Design report is done by industry experts and vehicle build is inspected and feedback is provided for further improvements during the design and development of the vehicles.
Reports are collected from all the teams, including the design report, cost report and build status review and they are further reviewed by industry experts. The event is scheduled for three days consisting of static and dynamic tests, which include safety as first and foremost mandatory criteria. The teams will provide a technical presentation for their tractor.
The presentation is evaluated based on design, cost, manufacturing concepts and their application. This is the final event where every tractor is allowed a performance test with various constraints. The constraints are built at track with sand bed and bump track. The tractor has to run three laps on each track, which will ensure vehicle stability and performance.
