    Suo motu contempt proceedings against policemen for entering court

    The Madras High Court took suo motu contempt against the Singanallur Police in Tirupur district for arresting a person inside the court at Tirupur based on a letter addressed by the Chief Judicial Magistrate, Tirupur, in this regard.

    The first bench comprising Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice PT Asha initiated suo motu contempt proceedings against Robert, head constable, Munisweeran, Inspector of Police and Velan, driver attached to the Singanallur Police Station. 

    When the matter was taken up, the Chief Justice asked the Government Pleader as to how in a civilised society could the police drag the accused from the court. 

    With the pleader seeking time to make submissions, the matter was posted in the afternoon. However, Additional Advocate General C Manishankar submitted that the DGP has been informed about the incident and assured that such things will not happen in future. 

    The Additional Advocate General also noted that a status report regarding the incident will be filed. Following this, the bench posted the case for further hearing on  Monday.
