Cop goes beyond call of duty to nab armed duo
A policeman, attached to the Intelligence Section (IS) of the City Police, braved a knife attack and managed to overpower a bike-borne duo on Madhavaram High Road, in the wee hours of Sunday. A police patrol team nabbed the second suspect.

Police officer D Sivalingam was in Sembium to gather reports regarding political events in the locality on Sunday, when the incident took place. He was checking the area near Perambur flyover, when he spotted duo with a machete in the front portion of their vehicle.
On suspicion, Sivalingam followed them on his bike. When the youngsters slowed down near a speed breaker on Madhavaram High Road–Raghavan Street junction, he intercepted them and took the ignition key from of the bike of the suspects.
After Sivalingam stopped them, one of the riders attacked him with a sickle. He suffered cut injury on his fingers and bruises on shoulders but managed to catch hold of the attacker, who was identified as Bharat Raj (20) of MKB Nagar.
Meanwhile, his associate Ajith of Kodungaiyur fled the spot. “A patrol vehicle was coming in the opposite side of the road. When the officer informed them about the incident, Sembium sub-inspector Bhaskar managed to catch the other suspect,” police said. Sources said that the duo was looking for potential targets to rob after investigation. The two have been remanded to judicial custody.
D Sivalingam was rewarded by the Commissioner of Police AK Viswanathan for his timely intervention and his brave act beyond his call of duty. As a person attached to IS, his duty was limited to collection of intelligence and not nabbing criminals.
