The house was opened for public viewing in 1990 by Mrs Janaki Ramachandran and MGR Charities managed the place for a long time. This was his official residence and was used by him for more than two decades. There are a number of personal effects of the actor-political leader that you can see.

It was bought by the matinee idol in 1970 and served as his political office, MGR Productions office, and, later, as the official residence of the Chief Minister. After his passing away in 1987, more built-up area was added and the house became a memorial.
