Shekher, who came to the court amid tight security, was granted bail by Magistrate S Malarvizhi, who directed him to appear before the court again in July 18 for receiving the copies of chargesheet.
A few days ago, police filed the chargesheet containing evidence, statement and the original Facebook post of the actor.
The Madras High Court had earlier dismissed his anticipatory bail plea and pulled up the police department for not taking action against him in connection with the case.
He then moved the Supreme Court which also dismissed his bail plea and directed him to appear before the Metropolitan Magistrate Court and apply for bail. In compliance with the Apex court directive and on the basis of a summons issued by the Magistrate Court when police filed the chargesheet, Shekher appeared before the court on Wednesday.
Shekher had filed the bail plea fearing arrest in connection with the cases registered against him after his controversial facebook remarks created a furore among the media fraternity, especially women journos, who staged protests in front of his office and his house.
In his plea, he said he did not have even the slightest intention to remark with bad intention on women or have any ulterior motive to disrespect the journalist community.
Shekher said he had forwarded the facebook post without reading it. The issue was taken up by several political parties, who demanded his arrest. Legislators of the principal opposition party Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) walked out of the Assembly on June 13, after the Speaker did not allow a discussion about Shekher
