The deceased was identified as Mohammed Hussain (25), son of Nawazudhin and Jerina. The couple has a daughter, Rasina Begum, who is married off. According to police sources, Mohammed Hussain was found dead with his throat slit near the railway track.

A knife was found abandoned at the sewer behind a private school nearby in Tiruvottiyur on June 10.

On information, police recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem examination. As his identity was not known, police initially suspected him to be a north Indian and pasted posters with his photo in the neighbourhood, requesting the public to furnish details about the person if they had any.

Meanwhile, Rasina Begum, who came to Tiruvottiyur a few days ago, noticed the posters and informed police that it was her brother Mohammed Hussain. Police immediately secured Nawazudhin for interrogation during which he admitted to having murdered his son as the latter had become a burden to him. “Mohammed was mentally ill since birth.

As he grew old, it became difficult to manage him and carry him around,” police quoted Nawazudhin as saying during the interrogation. On the day before the murder, Mohammed Hussain reportedly broke a few items in the house and it angered Nawazudhin.

As his wife was not in town at that time, he took Hussain to the murder spot around 2 am and slit his throat with a knife.

After ensuring that his son has died, Nawazudhin left the spot after abandoning the weapon in the sewer nearby. He reportedly told his wife he has admitted his son at a home in Coimbatore and thought that police will not detect the murder. Nawazudhin has been remanded in judicial custody.
