Five days after Rs 5.13 lakh mysteriously vanished from a farmer’s bank account in Ponneri, police on Tuesday arrested the cashier of the bank and an auto driver, from whom Rs 2.5 lakh was seized.
Chennai
The accused, S Suresh (38) of New Washermanpet and M Sigamani (43) of Avadi, were booked under four sections and remanded in judicial custody. Ravindranath (45) of Vichur near Minjur had recently deposited a cheque for Rs 6.5 lakh at the State Bank of India branch in Manali Pudhunagar.
However, when he returned to the bank to withdraw money, he was shocked to find that there was only about Rs 1 lakh in his account. He inquired the manager and came to know that the money had been withdrawn over the counter. He immediately lodged a complaint at Manali Pudhunagar police station.
A case was registered and police inquired the staff members as well as the visitors to the bank on the day when the money was withdrawn. It was found out that Suresh, who rides autorickshaw for Ola, withdrew the sum by furnishing fake signature in connivance with the cashier Sigamani. The cashier received Rs 2.5 lakh from Suresh.
