The deceased, P Rajesh, a pavement dweller, was working as a daily wage worker along with his father and also helped his mother sell old books.

Rajesh went missing on Pongal day (January 14) and based on his father Perumal’s complaint, Nungambakkam police had registered a case.

Meanwhile, three people, including two juveniles, surrendered at Nungambakkam Assistant Commissioner’s office and confessed that they had murdered Rajesh and buried him in the Nungabakkam crematorium on Pongal day.

According to the accused, Rajesh approached the boys when they were playing cricket at the crematorium around 4 pm and demanded money from them. An argument broke out among them and in a fit of rage, one of them punched Rajesh on his neck. The other three pushed him down and stamped on his face multiple times.

Since Rajesh fell unconscious, they dug a pit in the crematorium and buried him. It was not clear whether Rajesh was buried alive. One of the accused has been identified as M Bharathkumar (19) of East Namasivayapuram in Choolaimedu, while the other two are juveniles, said police. Two of the four accused were working as grave diggers at the crematorium.

When contacted, the assistant commissioner told DT Next that the accused were being interrogated and further details would emerge on Monday.
