Ramakrishnan, the 38-year-old brother of notorious gangster ‘Arumbakkam’ Radhakrishnan, and his associate were arrested by the St Thomas Mount police on Saturday, who also seized a countrymade pistol, a laptop, few mobile phones, a DSLR camera and a two-wheeler in their possession.
According to police, it was the arrest of G Dinesh (38), suspected to be involved in the heist at a Customs official’s house at Alandur in May, which gave them the first breakthrough. During interrogation, Dinesh apparently revealed Ramakrishnan’s whereabouts. He also gave the police the mobile phone number that Ramakrishnan used. Using this, a special team headed by Assistant Commissioner P Mohandoss traced his hideout to Tirusulam hillock.
On Friday, the police team surrounded Ramakrishnan and his aide Martinraj (25). Despite Ramakrishnan threatening to shoot the police personnel with the pistol, the police team overpowered the duo and arrested them.
A wanted suspect in several burglaries reported in the city, Ramakrishnan told the police that he had purchased the country-made firearm from Rajasthan for Rs 60,000 a few months ago. However, he claimed not to know how to use it, maintaining that he used it only to threaten others. Both him and Martinraj have been remanded in judicial custody.
