On specific information, Ennore police raided a house at Bharathiyar Nagar and found ganja hoarded in huge quantity. Police also searched two autos and a car parked in front of the house and seized ganja concealed in sacks, following which A Ilango (32) of Ernavoor and his wife I Kavitha (31) were arrested.
Police said Kavitha’s mother Kalyani was a notorious ganja peddler and a history-sheeter in Kasimedu fishing harbour police station. After she died a few months ago, Kavitha took over the business, while her husband Ilango, who used to run a printing press, sold the machines and started aiding Kavitha. He also owned the house and seized vehicles, which he used to rent out.
Police said that the couple would get the consignments delivered by a man from Andhra Pradesh, which they would pack in small sachets and sell them to peddlers.
Meanwhile, Vepery police secured a ganja peddler, Praveen Kumar (21) of Vyasarpadi, and seized 2 kg of contraband from him. All three were remanded in judicial custody.
