Egmore Art Gallery carries a royal legacy
The National Art Gallery in Egmore is considered to be one of the oldest in the country.

Constructed with red stones sourced from Satyavedu in Andhra Pradesh, the Gallery was ready by 1906 in Indo-Saracenic architecture. It houses paintings from Thanjavur, Rajasthan, Kangra and Deccan areas, as well as sandalwood sculptures.Â
The gallery contains several Mughal paintings, rare works of Raja Ravi Varma and various Tanjore Paintings. The art gallery also has numerous miniature paintings depicting court and battle scenes. Wood and ivory carvings, metal and bronze objects and British era portraits are among the other works of art.
