Tamil Nadu’s first advanced epilepsy centre inaugurated

The centre will provide the highest level of care and quality of life to patients with epilepsy and other seizure disorders, including curative epilepsy surgery.

Epilepsy is a neurological disorder in which patients experience recurrent seizures because a sudden surge of electrical activity in the brain causes a temporary disturbance in the messaging systems between brain cells. The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that epilepsy affects 50 million people worldwide. Studies revealed that 75 per cent of epileptics in India do not get treatment or have not been diagnosed at all. If epilepsy is not treated within the first 15 years, the child would become mentally disabled and treatment at a later date would be futile.

Inaugurating the centre, Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan said Tamil Nadu strives to ensure that state-of-the-art healthcare is provided to all.
