Heat returns to haunt city after short spell, RMC forecasts rain

S Balachandran, director of Area Cyclone Warning Centre, told media persons here on Thursday, “Strong winds are blowing over the Bay of Bengal. There is an upper air cyclonic circulation over the central Bay of Bengal and this will result in moderate rain in southern and northern parts of the state and Puducherry.” 

Even though Chennai and suburbs will remain partly overcast, there is a high possibility of heavy rain in northern parts, the official added. 

“As Southwest Monsoon is picking up, thunderstorms will slow down in the state and heat will gradually increase. Models indicate that circulation over the Bay of Bengal has moved slightly to the north-east, reducing the chance for thunderstorms,” said K Srikanth, a city-based weather blogger. 

Almost all areas of Chennai experienced moderate rains on Wednesday, while places in south got the best spells, he added. Places like Virinchipuram and Cheyyur also recorded very good rains. IMD observatories of Chennai recorded about 3 cm rain, which is nearly half of what is usually recorded in the month of June, added Srikanth.
