    Police seize 90 bags of gutkha from Minjur

    In yet another seizure of banned tobacco products, police seized a huge consignment of gutkha from a warehouse in Minjur on Thursday.

    Based on a tip-off, the Minjur police conducted a surprise raid in the warehouse near Minjur market and found the banned tobacco products stashed in 90 bags. Police arrested Balaji (28) of Minjur and owner of the premises in connection with the case. Police have started the investigation to identify others who are involved in the case. Meanwhile, Guindy police on Wednesday seized 100 kg of banned tobacco products that were smuggled into the city.

    Police on patrol duty stopped a man who alighted from a private bus with a bag. On suspicion, his baggage was searched and the consignment was found. The peddler, R Mahalingam (27) of Alandur, was arrested and remanded in judicial custody.

    Similarly, the Zam Bazaar police arrested F Mujibur Rahman (45) of Royapettah for selling foreign cigarettes and seized 100 packs from his shop on Wednesday.

    It may be recalled that the City Police had arrested four persons on May 18 after a surprise raid in warehouses in Mangadu and Porur, in which more than four tonnes of banned tobacco products including gutkha and cigarettes were seized.
