    Madras HC: Seven new judges sworn in, total strength rises to 63

    The Madras High Court Chief Justice, Indira Banerjee on Monday administered the oath of office to seven newly appointed judges. With this, the judges’ strength rose to 63 out of the sanctioned strength of 75 while the number of women judges rose to 12 enabling it to retain its position as the High Court with the highest number of woman judges in the country.

    The newly appointed judges who took oath are justices P T Asha, M Nirmal Kumar, Subramonium Prasad, N Anand Venkatesh, GK Ilanthiraiyan, Krishnan Ramaswamy and C Saravanan. All seven drawn from the Bar have been appointed as additional judges for two years by the government. As per the welcome address by Advocate General Vijay Narayanan, Justice PT Asha obtained her law degree from the Madras Law College in 1998, part of the first batch to undergo the 5-year law programme.

    Justice Subramonium Prasad obtained his legal degree from the Campus Law Centre, Delhi in 1990. He served as the standing counsel for Tamil Nadu in the Supreme Court. He has also represented the CBI as special counsel for fake encounter cases in Gujarat. Justice Anand Venkatesh from Dr Ambedkar Law College enrolled as an advocate in 1993.

    Justice GK Ilanthiraiyan obtained his law degree from the Dr Ambedkar Law College, Puducherry. After enrolling in 1994, he eventually started a law firm with his peers. Justice Krishnan Ramaswamy also from Dr Ambedkar Law College enrolled as an advocate in 1994, following which he also qualified as a Company Secretary. Justice C Saravanan is a 1994 graduate of the National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bangalore. His areas of practice included tax, customs, property disputes, company law and arbitration. Justice Saravanan is the third NLSIU graduate to become a judge of the High Court.
