The decision was taken at a meeting held in Chitlapakkam, after three deaths were reported in the southern suburbs in last one week due to rash driving by those driving the water tankers. Pallavaram tahsildar representing the Revenue department and Selaiyur Assistant Commissioner from City Police took part among others in the meeting.

During the interaction, the residents’ representatives pressed for a total ban on plying water tankers in their areas, citing risk for students going to school from next week. The Tanker Owners’ Association members, however, pointed out that it was only during summer they do the water business.

The government officials decided to bring some restriction on the operation of tankers. It was decided to ban them from entering residential areas and villages between 7 am and 10 .30 am and during the 3.30 pm to 7.30 pm. It was also decided to put up more speed breakers on accident prone roads. Tanker owners were told to keep vehicles’ fitness certificate up to date. They were also asked to ensure that only heavy vehicle licence holders were driving it.
