Multiple Sclerosis affects 20 in one lakh Indians
The Madras Medical College has seen 853 cases of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) since 2016, Health Minister C Vijaya Baskar said at a programme held in the city on MS Day on Wednesday. On the occasion, he also released orange balloons, besides felicitating the ambassadors who spread awareness regarding the disease.

Stating that it affects 300 per 1,00,000 people globally, the Minister said, “Around 20 in every 1,00,000 people are affected by this disease in India.” MRI scan, cerebrospinal fluid analysis, blood test and nerve tests are available in the hospital.
“The immediate treatment and continuous treatment required for the patients, including Physiotherapy, speech therapy and the like are provided at the hospital. Last year, 57 people were admitted to the hospital, out of which 26 people were affected by blindness. Of this, 15 patients were cured fully and remaining 11 got back partial vision.
31 patients were admitted for nervous diseases,” he stated, adding that treatment for this disease is provided under Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme.
“So far, medicines worth Rs 2.3 crore were provided to the Neurology Department and the state government is providing Rs 20,000 to Rs 25,000 to the patients for treatment every month,” he added. It may be noted that Multiple Sclerosis is a disease that affects the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord.
