It then became a memorial for World War II. It commemorates the sacrifices made by soldiers of the Madras Presidency in service to the British Crown. Formerly called the Cupid’s Bow, it is one of the two war memorials located in the city, Madras War Cemetery being the other one. It is a circular rock and marble structure built in the area that formerly housed the coastal belfry.

The Memorial is also known for the inscriptions of 1962 war with China, 1948 Kashmir aggression, Kargil Operations and the Indo-Pak War. The army salutes and pays a customary homage to all the martyrs during important national occasions.
