MTC completes geo-coding in city
The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) has completed geo-coding of the city and its suburbs and the officials will cover Villupuram next. Transport department officials are confident of completing the process by the end of this year across Tamil Nadu. On completion, a mobile application can be used to locate state-run buses.
Chennai
State transport minister MR Vijayabaskar had earlier announced that all the new buses, including MTC ones, would be fitted with Global Position Systems (GPS) devices and an application had been developed for the convenience of commuters.
The app would show details like arrival time and destinations. As part of the project, the MTC had completed the geo-coding process for 3,485 bus shelters in the city and suburbs where MTC fleets operated.
“As of now, we have started the process in Villupuram region and will complete it across the state by the end of the year,” said an official.
As many as 1,000 MTC buses out of 5,000 new buses were expected to be GPS-enabled.
Daniel Robinson, programme manager, Chennai City Connect, said, “though it is a difficult process, the transport department should speed up the geo-coding process across the state. Since the process has been completed in Chennai, commuters can use this facility after MTC buses are installed with GPS.”
A senior official of the state transport department said about 2,000 buses were to be procured soon and they had already seen new models of the vehicles. The official added that they were exploring the possibility of setting up a contact centre for a ‘panic switch system.’
