Chennai Metro Water (CMBWSSB) has offered to sell secondary treated sewage for purposes other than drinking at Rs 18.40 per 1,000 litres.

Secondary treated sewage suitable for landscaping, industries, cleaning of automobiles and toilet flushing could be collected from sewage treatment plants located at Kodungaiyur, Koyambedu, Nesapakkam and Perungudi, a statement issued by CMWSSB said. Metro Water has advised interested individuals, industries and commercial establishments to contact executive engineers (north and south) of sewage treatment plants in Kodungaiyur, Koyambedu, Nesapakkam and Perungudi in the following numbers 8144930800 and 8144930600.

Significantly, CMWSSB has not been so forthcoming in supplying drinking water. Chennai Metro Water has been rationing water by reducing the daily supply from 830 million litres per day (mld) to 650mld for a while now. If it manages to squeeze the last ounce of water from its four reservoirs -- which currently store 3.1 one thousand million cubic feet jointly -- and judiciously use water from the two desalination plants, CMWSSB would be able to keep the city’s water pipes flowing easily for the next three months. By then, the northeast monsoon will set in which will replenish water sources in this part of the state.
