Panic spread in Kancheepuram town on Saturday after some trees on the district court premises caught fire.
Chennai
The police said the fire spread to the trees from the waste dumped on the campus. As the trees, some as high as 30 feet, started burning, the fire was visible from far-off places.
The Fire and Rescue Services personnel rushed to the spot with fire tenders and put out the fire after a valiant two-hour operation. The police too reached the spot and kept the public out of the premises to prevent accidents. The fire, which started around 10 pm raged till midnight. Fire personnel said the trees were wilted and dry in the summer and caught fire. They said it was an uphill task to bring the blaze under control. Since the fire accident was at night, there was no loss of life, they said.
Also, there was an electric generator very close to the fire spot. Luckily, the fire was brought under control before it spread to the building and there was no loss of property too. No injury had been reported, the police said.
