NGO starts campaign to push state to pass Lokayukta Act

Pointing out that Tamil Nadu was the only state other than Jammu and Kashmir to not have passed the Lokayukta Act, Arappor Iyakkam, a people’s movement, started a campaign on Saturday against the lack of any initiative on part of the government.

The SC had asked the state government to take immediate action and report back by July 10. However, the state government continued to remain silent, they alleged. Noting that the Assembly was scheduled to convene from May 29, the organisation said this was the right time to start the campaign.

“Arappor had come up with a model bill in 2016 in consultation with an expert committee consisting of Santosh Hegde, former Karnataka Lokayukta; Vasanthi Devi, former vice-chancellor of the Manonmaniam Sundaranar University and former IAS officer Poornalingam,” said Jayaram V of the NGO.

The NGO had been demanding a public hearing before the government introduced the bill in the legislative assembly. Such a consultation and feedback would help improve the draft bill, he said.
