Nilgiri langurs from Vandalur to be shifted

This is part of the exchange programmes between zoos across India – and abroad – wherein wild animals common to each region are send to areas where they are not common or are non-existent. Such programmes are also necessary to prevent inbreeding among animals in the same zoo, as introducing new blood lines help keep a healthy population. 

In addition to the Nilgiri langurs from Chennai, the Mysuru zoo will also get a male lion-tailed macaque, a pair of white tigers and four zebras (one male and three female) from Tel Aviv, Israel, under the latest exchange. 

In an earlier exchange about six months ago, Vandalur zoo had received five pairs of glossy ibis, two pairs of open billed storks, a pair of water monitors, a Siamese crocodile, and a pair of Himalayan bears from Nandankanan Zoological Park in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. 

In return, the Bhubaneswar zoo was given five pairs of painted storks, two pairs of white peacocks, and a pair each of Nilgiri langurs and reticulated pythons.
