Goondas Act detenu released from Puzhal prison by mistake
In what seems like a faux pas by a low-ranking jail staff member at Puzhal prison complex, a murder suspect slapped with Goondas Act managed to walk out to freedom on April 28, despite the court refusing to quash his detention order.

Jail officials here are now conducting an inquiry into the incident of the unauthorised release of a Goondas Act detenu from Puzhal Central Prison II, 20 days ago. A warden, who is believed to be responsible for the release, has been placed under suspension.
City police, on their part, are now hunting for the suspect Ravi alias Ravichandran alias ‘Manga’ Ravi, a history-sheeter of Tondiarpet, based on a complaint from jail officials about the release by mistake. He was a murder suspect lodged in jail since 2017.
When contacted, Puzhal II Prison Superintendent P Senthamaraikannan said that an internal inquiry has been initiated to find out how the warden had released the accused without an order. The inquiry is expected to clear the doubts if the warden allowed the inmate to walk out deliberately or by mistake.
Sources said that the wife of Ravichandran had approached the court against the preventive detention of her husband. But the court had refused to quash the detention order. However, when the court order reached the jail, it was systematically handed over from top to bottom with instruction ‘to take action accordingly’.
The warden had reportedly failed to understand the order and by mistake released the accused, sources added.Later, when senior jail officials came to know about the early and unauthorised release of the accused, the warden was immediately placed under suspension.
