Areas falling under the Mudichur village panchayat like Shakthi Nagar, Amudham Nagar, Senthil Nagar, Veeraragavan Nagar, SK Nagar, Siva Vishnu Nagar were badly affected due to inundation. There are 12 main roads and 36 connecting streets in Mudichur, all of which suffered damage.
Irked by the poor condition of roads, residents questioned officials during the village council meeting held on May 1. “Roads in other areas which were equally affected during the flood have been repaired but not even a single road in Mudichur was attended to. Even school buses are not ready to come inside Mudichur due to poor roads,” Vishnu Nagar residents’ association president P Davamani said.
“We were once proud to be a part of the Mudichur village panchayat as it had won several awards for its civic-related initiatives. But now, we are feeling ashamed of the situation,” said R S Manoharan, president of Shakti Nagar welfare association. When contacted, N C Krishan, former Chairman of St Thomas Mount panchayat union, under which the Mudichur village panchayat comes, told DT Next,
“We prepared the estimate to repair the road early in 2016 but we did not have funds to repair all the roads. The government allocated funds from the money given by the Central Government but that money was not given to us and our term has also lapsed.” He said the District collector has been requested to consider the issue and repair the roads utilising his special funds.
