The incident happened on May 7 when the 20-year-old girl, student of a private college in Pallavaram, reached Guindy by train and got on to the share autorickshaw to reach Iyyapanthangal, where she resides.
As she was the only passenger on board, the auto driver A Janardhanan (27) of Porur and his friend S Pavin (21) of Kovur decided to make use of the opportunity.
According to police, the girl raised an alarm when the vehicle deviated from the usual route. They began speaking to her in an obscene manner and even tried to remove her shawl, police officers said. Pavin allegedly took out a knife, threatening to kill her if she made any noise.
But the auto was caught in traffic congestion near a signal on the road leading to Red Hills. Using this window of opportunity, she jumped out of the vehicle while the duo and the auto disappeared in the crowded road.
Following a written complaint lodged by her father, Devaraj from Tiruchy, the local police began investigation.
Based on the leads, the officers zeroed in on Janardhanan and Pavin, who were picked up from the autorickshaw stand in Guindy. They were remanded in judicial custody and sent to Puzhal central prison.
