Slum kids get taste of English, thanks to cops
About 100 girls and boys of Kannagi Nagar from classes 1 to 12 are getting trained in spoken English and soft skills for free, thanks to an initiative the City Police.
Chennai
Eddica, a city-based training centre focusing on moulding communication skills in children, was roped in by Deputy Commissioner Rohith Nathan to impart the skills. This is part of a series of initiatives by the police to keep the children’s attention focused on academics and extra-curricular activities.
The 10-day summer camp attempts to make English skills easily accessible to students, and also train them in maintaining a positive attitude and good body language. The classes would cover personality development and public speaking, too. “Though they are talented, the kids lack communication skills,” says Rani S T, director and founder, Eddica.
Kannagi Nagar inspector N Sivakumar says this is the latest of their initiatives to prevent kids from straying into illegal activities.
“We have been giving football training in the morning hours and Kabaddi in the evenings. We also provide them cricket kits with the help of sponsors. As there are many talented players here, we thought teaching them English would be of great help to them,” the inspector said.
