    Man attempts to con MLA of 15L, arrested

    In an unusual turn of events, a legislator almost became a victim of a con artist who posed as a ‘Central Vigilance inspector’ and tried to extract Rs 15 lakh from him on Monday night

    The conman managed to meet Pallavaram MLA, E Karunanidhi, of DMK, twice the same night, first at a restaurant on GST Road and then at a petrol bunk on Pallavaram – Thuraipakkam radial Road between 8.30 pm and 10.30 pm. 

    When they met at the restaurant, the man identified himself as Varadaraja Perumal, Central Vigilance Inspector and also showed a supporting identity card. He then demanded Rs 15 lakh for not carrying out a raid at the MLA’s house. 

    “The man posing as the vigilance officer was trying to threaten Karunanidhi with a possible raid saying that the legislator had amassed ill-gotten wealth. But the MLA said he didn’t have money and that he couldn’t part with such a huge amount,” police said. 

    The MLA later returned home and discussed the matter with his brother. 

    “The second meeting was scheduled near the petrol bunk. While we waited near the bunk the conman came and again asked for money,” the MLA said in his compliant to the police. 

    Karunanidhi lodged a complaint with Chromepet police station with details of the conman’s phone number and bike number. 

    By Wednesday morning, police tracked the conman in Thiruvotriyur. He was identified as Varadaraja Perumal, 30, and he manages a small snack selling outlet. Police have arrested him under four IPC Sections including cheating, criminal intimidation, cheating by personation and attempt to commit an offence.

    A woman was allegedly cheated of Rs 18 lakh by a gang whichpersuaded her to invest in Wow Coin (cryptocurrency) and get huge returns.

    In her complaint, Lakshanika, a pharmacist in T Nagar,stated that she befriended Madhesh on FB last year after which he told herabout investing in Wow Coin and asked her to meet Padmaj BommushettySrinivasalu, her daughter Aarthy Bommushetty and Joseph Clint Rodrigues in AnnaNagar.  

    Believing them, Lakshanika allegedly transferred Rs 18 lakhto their account.

    Lakshanika had lodged a complaint at Anna Nagar policestation, but it was not accepted after which she moved court in her favour.Anna Nagar Assistant Commissioner Gunasekaran confirmed that Lakshanika’scomplaint was received three days ago.
