The regatta, conducted by the Royal Madras Yacht Club (RMYC) and the Indian Navy, will witness 20 boats and 60 sailors racing to win the top honours.

Rear Admiral Alok Bhatnagar, flag officer of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry Naval Area (FOTNA), said that this is the first time such a competition is being held. “Various types of boats — from 49ers, 29ers, J-80 and many other makes — will be taking to the seas. The response has been enthusiastic; we have participants from all parts of the country, with 60 yachtsmen and 20 boats participating in the competition,” he said, adding that the race is also open to the fishermen.

RMYC will be conducting the competition. Speaking on the occasion, RMYC officials pointed out that this is a green sport – as the boats rely on the wind to navigate and don’t use fuel. Navaz, an RMYC representative, said, “Different classes of boats will be racing at the same time.

The handicap of each class of the boat will be worked out based on international standards. This is known as pursuit racing.”

The practice race will be held on April 26 from 12 pm onwards, on an hourly basis.

“Four races will be held back to back on April 27 and 28. Two more races will be held on Sunday (April 29). The best of the 10 races will be considered. The competition is open to anyone above the age of 8 with a minimum of three members per boat,” added Navaz.

There will also be a series of races for novices and big boats. “This will be an opportunity for the big boats in the city to participate,” said the rear admiral, adding that the event will be an attempt to popularise the sport among the younger generation.
