Anakaputhur municipality which consists of 18 wards and 75,000 residents is among the fastest-growing suburbs south off Chennai. According to the local body officials, residents of this area need approximately 30 lakh litres of water every day for their regular use.

But, people living here claim that the municipality is supplying water only once in 20 days. One of the reasons cited is the delay in completion of the common overhead tank. Residents demand that the speed of the construction, which commenced over two years ago, needs to be hastened and finished as soon as possible.

“We buy water from outside every day as we are not getting enough amount of water despite paying tax. The municipality is supplying water only once in 20 days,” said Geetha, a resident.

When contacted, supervisor of the Anakaputhur town panchayat Saravanan said, “The problem is we are not getting enough amount of water to supply to everyone at the same time, thus the irregularity. During this summer, we plan to get water from a nearby quarry and supply it to the people regularly. And from next summer onwards, we will get water from the Chembarambakkam lake.”

When asked about the status of the overhead tank, Saravanan said that the town panchayat, apart from repairing the old borewells which are not in use, will finish construction of the tank soon.
