Started in 1958, National Library Week is sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries. It is dedicated to celebrate the contributions of libraries and librarians. Ambassador Juster chose selections from the award-winning book,The Phantom Tollbooth, written by American author Norton Juster (the Ambassador’s uncle), and read it to students, parents, teachers and librarians.
The Phantom Tollbooth is a children’s fantasy adventure novel published in 1961 by Random House (USA). The book’s theme is focused on the love of education and the adventures that come with intellectual exploration.
Ambassador Juster also visited the American Center and interacted with the school students to emphasise the value of reading.
“The ambassador thoroughly enjoyed his time spent with the students and was impressed at their career goals. He wished he could have spent more time with them, but had to limit himself due to his tight schedule,” the statement from the American Centre said.
The US Consul for Public Diplomacy and Public Affairs, Lauren Lovelace, spoke with the students and shared some insight on careers in the fields of writing, illustrating and library science.
