The man, identified as B Hari, used one end of a saree to hang his wife Nirmala (41) before he hanged himself on the other end. The couple lived in their own houses in Ganapathy Nagar in Samiyar Madam and had two married daughters. Hari worked as a carpenter while Nirmala was a homemaker, police said.

The neighbours became suspicious when the couple did not step out of the house on Monday. They decided to find out if anything was wrong. When they peeked inside through the window, the neighbours found the couple hanging from the ceiling. They immediately alerted Hari’s sister Selvi and the Manali New Town police.

The bodies were removed and were sent to Stanley Government Hospital for post mortem examination. Speaking to DT Next, Selvi said Nirmala has been suffering from depression for the last two years, for which she had been undergoing treatment. However, there was no improvement. “They would often quarrel because Nirmala used to shout at everyone all of a sudden for no particular reason. It had become worse in the last two years, following which she underwent treatment,” said Selvi, who saw Hari last on Sunday.

Based on preliminary examination of the bodies, police suspect that the suicide happened on Sunday evening. “Using the same saree tied to a fan, Hari must have hanged Nirmala in one end before he hanged himself using the other end,” said police.  Manali New Town police have registered a case under Section 174 of CrPC, and further investigation is on.
