In a first, mother booked after minor son riding bike kills pedestrian, dies in mishap
Acting upon a warning issued last month, the police booked the mother of a 16-year-old boy, who died after fatally knocking down a pedestrian in the city. She was booked by the city traffic police for allowing her underage son to ride a two-wheeler.

The police have registered a case against Meena Venkatesh (40), mother of the boy, a Class 11 student, who died after killing a pedestrian, S Babu (42). The bike was registered in the name of Meena, a resident of Mogappair.Â
Police said that the boy was riding the bike taking his classmate to the tuition centre at Thirumangalam on Wednesday evening. When they neared Park Road, he hit a pedestrian Babu, a resident of Anna Street. While Babu died on the spot, the boy fell and hit the platform and sustained head injuries. He was taken to hospital, where he succumbed to injuries later in the night.Â
Police said the boy did not wear a helmet and was riding Bajaj Pulsar 200 CC bike with his classmate, a girl, at the time of the accident. The girl escaped with minor injuries. The boy was rushed to the Kilpauk Medical College (KMC) hospital and was later shifted to a hospital in Thousand Lights, where he died.Â
It may be recalled that the police had issued a warning that parents of underage drivers would be booked after the menace of juvenile riding two-wheelers increased in the city.Â
The Tirumangalam traffic police registered a case under Section 304 (a) (death caused due to negligent driving) against the boy immediately after Babu’s death, but the case was close. However, a fresh case was booked against the boy’s mother, in whose name the bike was registered, for allowing her son to ride the vehicle.
