    Court takes suo motu cognisance of encroachments on storm water drains

    The Madras High Court on taking suo motu cognisance of a newspaper report about encroachments over storm water drains along the Adayar river, issued notice to the Disaster Management Committee and other authorities of the State government on Thursday.

    A division bench comprising Justice M Sathyanarayana and Justice P Rajamanickam, also directed the special Government pleader Thambidurai, who sought time to obtain instructions from the State, to take immediate action on the encroachments. The bench, on treating the report as a writ petition, also directed the Special Government Pleader to file a status report on the latest position and posted the case for further hearing to June 7. 

    The newspaper report titled ‘buildings encroach storm water drains’ highlighted several encroachments in the form of buildings over the culvert areas of Velachery, Perungudi, Tharamani, Kallukuttai and IIT villages on the Adayar river which is the main storm water drain passing through the above areas.
