Health officials say cholera under check in city hospital
Two cases of cholera were confirmed and three others suspected following tests at the Apollo Speciality Cancer Hospital, Teynampeton Monday. The source of transmission is yet to be confirmed, though health department officials suspect it spread from patients from abroad. It has been two years since cholera was reported in the state.

Stating that two people from Uganda and Oman were tested positive for cholera, City Health Officer Dr N A Senthilnathan said, “A Kenyan national and two from Bengal are also suspected to have contracted it.”
It is now confined to the hospital, from where the State Food Safety Department has taken food and water samples, besides nearby shops, to find the source.
“It is likely that it spread from foreign patients, but it needs to be confirmed,” added. According to him, there was no possibility of it spreading, as the entire place has been quarantined to ensure that the disease does not spread to other patients.
“There should be something common between the five – food, water or articles they handled. The disease is spread through water, food and flies. Steps are already being taken to identify the source. We are working with the Food Safety department to monitor the case,” said Dr K Kolandaisamy, director, Department of Public health.
